Climbing

Share
It appears that I've sort of gotten into climbing lately. I wasn't sure if I would be able to pull it off but I've really kept with it and I am super excited about it. I joined the Hoofers and honestly, that was a bit of a waste of money, I haven't really done much with it. I have had a hard time connecting with people and it has been pretty hot and humid to be doing much climbing outside.
But, I got a month long membership with Boulder's Climbing Gym including free rental equipment and a tie in belay class, all for SUPER cheap. I also got nearly new pair of shoes for cheap off of Craig's List and those have been working out well. Since then I have been in the climbing gym once or twice a week... and I am loving it. Really, I am. Also, I have been climbing with my good friend Dana and the bonding time has been awesome. She is a rock star on the wall. (I am always looking for other people to climb with, so if you want to climb with me, let me know)
I'm also really excited to see the progress I have been making. I have gone climbing a couple of times over the past few weeks and it has been great. I have been getting more confident, no more stopping short, no more coming down before I reach the top, no more doubting myself. I have set a few new rules for myself and I am excited about the results. I have decided that I don't get to come down off of the wall unless I reach the top, or fall off. I have also decided to try things that I'm not sure if I can do or not. The new shoes have given me the confidence to use smaller and smaller foot holds and it has opened up a lot of options.
Tonight I really hit some milestones and I am so proud of myself. I made it to the top of not one, but two climbs that I had previously tried and fallen off of. Shit yeah! There are a few clip in climbs that have an incline until about half way up the wall and then they flatten out. One of them I had tried a number of times and hadn't been able to make it over the ridge. Tonight I nailed it, not too hard, right up to the top. Then the even harder one. Why not? Go big or go home, right? It was tough, really so very tough, but I made it. Wow, seriously. It took me a few minutes after that one to even muster the strength to get up to go home but I made it to the top of the wall.
Now I am sitting here, too tired to even change out of my clothes or shower. My hands are parched and caked in chalk dust, my muscles ache and I smell like sweat. I feel so intensely satisfied it is hard to express properly. I love to hurt like this, it feels like success to me.

It's History

Now that my grandfather has passed away, my grandmother has been moved into a home for people with degenerative memory. She loves it there and they love her. She couldn't live on her own and this is a place where she is able to have her own room with her own furniture and own things, and we can all visit her. It's as much of a Win/Win as you can get in this kind of situation.
So my family is selling my grandparent's house, which means that it needs to be cleaned out. I went over there for a couple of hours today and it left me with just a little bit to process. My grandparents probably wouldn't be classified as hoarders, but that just might be the case. When you walk into their home it isn't a mess, there isn't stuff everywhere. Everything is organized and convenient... but there is so much of everything. Everything of everything. All of it was useful. None of it was trash or dirty, but there was so much of it. I frequently forget that my grandparents had a four bedroom house, and every nook and every cranny was packed neatly and carefully with things.
I was in charge of the craft room, which meant that I was sorting through jars of buttons, shoe boxes of bias tape, needles and pins and bits of elastic. All of it bagged or boxed and tucked into any available space in my grandparent's home. Along with this are pictures, postcards, news paper clippings, and every single greeting card my grandma ever received. Ever.
I'll be honest, most of this stuff ended up in the trash. I know that some of it may be use-able and there is someone out there who could do something productive with much of what I trashed... but in reality the effort that it would take to get it to the person who actually needs it would be more than my family could accomplish at this point. We have so much valuable and useful stuff to save that we can't really put that much effort into stray buttons and bits of ancient elastic. We just can't. We are saving some things, useful things, clean and new things. I got a crock pot, electric beaters, knitting needles, etc. I also got some good sentamental things like the infamous "ugly bird" (long story) and some rose mawled Norwegian horses to remember my grandparents by.

But here is the amazing part. Despite the fact that my grandparents weren't wealthy, we have found some really amazing stuff. Seriously and truly amazing stuff. These are the two things that I left with today that really blow my mind. The first one is the small pocket knife that my aunt found and I convinced my family to give to me. On either side of the body of the pocket knife is a small window with an ancient and tiny snap shot of a naked pin up. Freakin' sweet! The other thing that I discovered today is that my mother's mother's mother was a milliner, which means that she made hats. We found an amazing box of feather hats that are breath taking. They are the small, fascinator kind that perch on the head and look ridiculous and amazing. I was allowed to take one home and it is really a work of art. And to think that it was made by someone who lived generations before me just rocks my socks off.

Awesome awesome week

I had a truly awesome week, I mean seriously awesome. Right now, this moment I'm sitting here, sipping a rum, watching cartoons, and covered in cats. So, that right there is enough to be an awesome night. But so much more has happened. In the past two days I've been offered three jobs. I accepted two jobs yesterday and I started one last night. I start training at Captel on June 20th and last night I started my training to become a host for Madison Team Trivia. I am really excited about both jobs but I think that Team Trivia is going to be particularly fun.
I also received a bunch of stuff in the mail today and that's always overly exciting. I got the final supplies for my bento box, just in time to take lunches to work. So now I have a bento box (with owls on it!) with chopsticks (and a carrying case), rice molds, and sauce bottles. I made a cute little rice panda in it today and it was somewhat exciting. I also got a cute pair of shoes in the mail today. Technically they are Crocs, but they are the new, adorable, fashion Crocs. They are super comfortable and cheap and I think they are pretty cute so... win. I have been needing an "every day" and "just walkin' around" pair of shoes for a while and I think this will be a good match.
And (and!) tonight I joined the Hoofers' Mountaineering club and went to my first meeting at the Union. There were more guys than I was expecting (it was 12 guys to... me) but everyone was super nice to me. I admitted that I was a super newbie and people were informative without being condescending. We had a good conversation about climbing shoes and I feel like I learned a lot. I should be going climbing at Devil's Lake this Saturday and I am so utterly excited I can hardly stand it. I searched climbing gear on Craig's List earlier today and I have a good chance at getting a pair of good climbing shoes for pretty cheap. So hopefully if things continue the way they have been I will be climbing in new gear all Saturday with a bunch of new buddies.
Awesome!

Workout!

Share
Nancy
Today starts the first day of my workout routine! (Yay, go me!) I have been wanting to lose a little bit of weight, but mostly I've been wanting to feel healthier and stronger and the best way to do that is to have an actual schedule. I'm not exactly sure how this will go but I'm going to try my best to make this work. I am going to be using this website http://www.women-workout-routines.com/free-workout-routines.html to help me and my goal will be to do two workouts a day.

Wish me luck!
